BACKGROUND

Horwood Bagshaw is a long-established South Australian company founded [in its initial format] in 1838.

The company has progressed through various structures and locations in & around Adelaide, but was consolidated in Mannum from 1975.

In 1998, Horwood Bagshaw was purchased by Adelaide based Sweeney Investments to become a South Australian privately-owned and based company.

The factory at Mannum has been extensively upgraded over the last ten years, and provides an efficient facility, in particular, to process [from cutting through to painting] large steel structures.

The above facilities allows Horwood Bagshaw to operate two divisions, ie,

Contract Engineering: Horwood Bagshaw has had extensive experience as a Contract Engineer over a prolonged period with the mining, automotive & wine industries.

This has allowed the company to develop welding skills for mild steel, stainless steel & aluminium, and maintain a solid group of boilermakers/welders, many of whom have been trained by the company.

Agricultural Machinery: Recent emphasis has seen on the development of its range of Tillage & Seeding equipment [for which it holds a 15% share of the Australian market]. Participation in this segment allows Horwood Bagshaw to maintain an attractive range of skills [particularly for module fabrication] which are complementary to its Contract Engineering activity.

LOCATION

Horwood Bagshaw is located approx 80 kilometres from Adelaide in the Murray River township of Mannum.

PRODUCTION HISTORY

Horwood Bagshaw has built-up experience in the fabrication of heavy-duty assemblies / equipment over a number of years.

Of relevance to fabricators is Horwood Bagshaw’s recent involvement in:

  • Stainless Steel rotary fermentation tanks for AG Engineering [and their wine industry clients].
  • Fabrication of stainless and mild steel Automotive Paint Shop structures for Haden Engineering [and their clients Holden, Toyota & Mitsubishi].
  • Fabrication of underground shelters for Telecom Australia
  • Conveyor track for both Mitsubishi and Holden Motor Company
  • An underground excavator for the mining industry

The company’s agricultural product range is centred on robust Tillage & Seeding equipment. However, the range also includes a Grader Scraper used in laser-levelling irrigation bays for cotton and rice growing. The earth-engaging nature of these machines has ingrained in all employees the need for robustness, reliability and durability.

PRODUCTION FACILITIES

Horwood Bagshaw’s administrative and production facilities are located on a 28 acre site in the township of Mannum.
The significant feature of the facility is the undercover area of 10,500 square metres available for manufacture / fabrication / assembly.

This undercover area has allowed Horwood Bagshaw to process high volumes of large-framed machines/devices within a relatively short time frame.

A clean layout of Fabrication Bays, underneath overhead cranes, facilitates relatively simple processing.7

The 4,420 square metres of Production space under cover is allocated approx as follows:

Activity Services Area
[sq m]

PAINTING FACILITIES

The modern, efficient Paint Shop is located in a separate building of 2,400 square metres.

Product is moved through the Paint Shop on an overhead rail system. Very heavy sections can be moved by transporters.
The size of the Paint Shop, and its spray booths, facilitates the painting of very large sections/structures.

Top coats can be applied electrostatically and produce a high quality finish or two pack finishes can be accommodated.
